Climate Change, by definition, is “the change of climate that is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity, altering the composition of the global atmosphere”. Aforementioned human activity is mainly embodied with pollution, that arises from industrial activity and other sources that produce greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrofluorocarbons. Once produced, these gases remain trapped in our atmosphere for years and years, damage the ozone layer, and contribute to the warming of our atmosphere by absorbing the spectrum of infrared light. With the change, order of the seasons, temperature levels, adaptation of many species are highly affected, in a negative way. Contributers of climate change varies from countless human made damages made by industrial countries to actual natural factors. Despite the threat climate change constitutes to humanity and all the species, biggest contributers refuse to take a step back, some of them even deny the existance of climate change. Unlike some world leaders, we as EnvironmenTED 2018 family, do not believe that “the concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive”. Climate change is a fact, and it is one of the biggest issues of our day. Because of this very reason, we invite you all to EnvironmenTED 2018 themed “Earth and Climate" to really focus on climate, its change, contributers, elements and everything about it.
COMMITTEE TOPICS
1
ECOS Climate change has some severe consequences on biophysical environment considering the changes in the length of seasons, glacial retreat, rise in the sea level and the frequency of extreme atmospheric events. What actions can EU take in order to reduce the negative impacts of the climate change?
2
GLOW Many greenhouse gases occur naturally, but human activity is increasing their concentration in the atmosphere. In addition, some chemicals cause holes in the ozone layer of the atmosphere. What can be done in order to diminish the effects ofgreenhouse gases and dangerous chemicals?
3
POLU Pollution constitutes great danger in terms of climate and it is considered as the biggest threat to earth and global temperature level. What can EU do to prevent pollution?
4
ACDE Acid rain describes any form of precipitation with high levels of nitric and sulfuric acids and is mostly caused by human activities. Considering its effects on nature and human health, what precautions can EU take?
5
DEFO It is estimated that more than 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide are released to the atmosphere due to deforestation, which is mainly the act of cutting and burning forests, every year. Given that the forests affect the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, what precautions should be taken to prevent deforestation?
6
AGRI As farming activities directly depend on weather conditions, agriculture is highly exposed to climatic actions. Also, the causes of climate change include environmentally wrong farming techniques and industrial livestock agriculture. Considering that agriculture obviously affects human health; what precautions can be taken in order to minimize agriculture based conflicts and prevent negative effects of the climate change on agriculture?
7
ENPO Considering that one of the main factors causing carbon dioxide exposure is energy policies; the EU has been formulating strategies concerning energy consumption to be sustainable, by lowering the greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and fossil fuels. In what ways can EU arrange the energy policies in order to eliminate the factors that cause extreme climatic conditions and global warming?
8
NAFA In addition to the hazards caused by humans, there are a number of natural factors which are responsible for climate change such as, but not limited to, the continental drift, volcanoes, ocean currents and the earth’s tilt. Which precautions should the EU take in order to minimize the effects of natural factors on climate change?
